Description

Savage Highlands State Park is located about ten miles west of Frostburg, MD, near the Alleghany Front and Eastern Continental Divide in Garrett County. It is securely positioned within the westernmost reaches of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, despite being perched over 2500 ft in elevation on Big Savage Mountain.

Geography:

NATURAL FEATURES: Savage Highlands State Park features dense, hardwood forests and steep hills typical of the Appalachian Plateau. Trails from Savage Highlands State Park will traverse Savage River State Forest and provide access to Mudlick Run and the Savage River.

Recreation:

RECREATION: Recreation opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and picnicking. When conditions allow, cross-country skis and snowshoes are available for rent at the Highlands Lodge. Hunting and fishing opportunities are also available in the surrounding Savage River State Forest.

Facilities:

CABINS: Savage Highlands State Park offers 18 cabins for nightly rental - each featuring either a king or queen size bed in the upstairs loft, a cozy living room with a gas log fireplace, and a full bathroom. Some cabins also have a sleeper sofa in the living room. A mini-fridge, microwave, and coffee maker are also provided. Cabins 6-18 are designated as pet-friendly.
YURTS: In addition to the cabins, the park has eight luxury yurts - each featuring a king size bed, cozy living room furniture, a gas log fireplace, a full bathroom, and wifi. A minifridge, microwave, and coffee maker are also provided. Pets are not allowed.
HIKE-IN RUSTIC CAMPSITES: For those seeking a more unique, backcountry experience, the park also has hike-in rustic campsites. These primitive campsites are located along the Cabin Loop Trail and Woodcock Trail, and can only be accessed by hiking 400-500 yards from the trailhead parking area. Each campsite features a fire ring, picnic table, and food storage box to prevent conflicts with bears and other wildlife.

Nearby Attractions:

Frostburg, Maryland (10 miles) is a thriving main street community featuring the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, the Great Allegheny Passage Trail and a thriving arts, cultural and business center in Allegany County. Grantsville, Maryland (12 miles) is a small, rural town in Garrett County that features an arts and entertainiment district home to world renowned Appalachian artists. Grantsville is also the location of historic Casselman River Bridge State Park (currently closed for bridge repairs). New Germany State Park (14 miles) provides a traditional park experience with trails, a small lake with a swimming beach, campground, cabins and other amenities.

From Interstate 68, take Exit 29 for MD-546 toward Finzel. Travel east on Beall School Road. At the stop sign, turn right onto Old Frostburg Road. When the road comes to a "Y", make a slight left onto Frostburg Road. In 2.8 miles, turn right onto Mt. Aenta Road. Travel 1.5 miles on Mt. Aetna Road to Savage Highlands Lodge (1600 Mt. Aetna Road, Frostburg, Maryland).

Caution on Mt. Aetna Road: The road is steep, narrow, and reduced to a single lane in several spots. Drive slowly and be prepared to pull off or yield to oncoming traffic. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is required during the winter months.
